- Feb 1: Mass conservation, Bousinesq approximation (mass conservation = volume conservation), scaling differential equations, Eulerian vs. Lagrangian flow, advective terms.
- Feb 3: Definition of the streamfunction, forces in fluids, the equations of motion, the hydrostatic approximation.
- Feb 8: Forces in fluids, the complete equations of motion, hydrostatic pressure and the hydrostatic assumption, derivation of no shear in an inviscid fluid, geostrophic degeneracy.
- Feb 10: Shallow water equations, recasting conservation of mass in terms of transport divergence and sea level changes.
- Feb 15,17: NO CLASS
- Feb 22: Linearized shallow water equations, conservation of potential vorticity.
- Feb 24: Rossby adjustent problem (see Gill, Atmosphere-Ocean Dynamics, Chapter 7)
